Derek achieved the rank of Eagle in September 2008. He graduated from Austin High School on May 28, 2009 with an Advanced Diploma. He was awarded an academic scholarship and a band scholarship to attend the University of North Alabama and pursue a degree in Music Education. He will be in the UNA Marching Band. He also received a scholarship from the American Legion when he was honored as Morgan County Eagle Scout of the Year for 2008.
